 How it Works

For a more technical detailed explanation - Click here.

Terabak software is loaded on to your computer, a 'Backup Set' is created, and a schedule is set. After you've completed these three tasks, you may either start the backup, or close the program and the backup will start based on your schedule you chose.

I M P OR T A N T
During the creation of your 'Backup Set' you will be asked for an ENCRYPTION key.  You may use the default setting, which is the  password you selected when you signed up for a trial account or given to you by a Terabak representative.  You may at this point choose another ENCRYPTION KEY if you wish; However, make sure it is something you can and will remember.  Terabak employees have no access to your ENCRYPTION KEY.  IT IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN RETRIEVE YOUR DATA FROM OUR SERVERS.  IF YOU LOOSE OR FORGET YOUR ENCRYPTION KEY, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RECOVER YOUR DATA WHEN YOU NEED IT!!!!

You can view your ENCRYPTION KEY at any time by editing your 'Backup Set', selecting the 'Encryption' option and unchecking the 'Mask Encryption Key' option, then you can make note of the key.

Some may ask why can't you just send me the ENCYRPTION KEY?  Well, the simple answer is, if we have your key, we could potentially access your data.  Part of a secure backup solution is that only you should be able to access your information.  You alone are responsible for your ENCRYPTION KEY.

Once the backup starts, the information is compressed and encrypted BEFORE it leaves your computer.  Terabak software uses the same level of encryption currently used by most banks and financial institutions.   It is then transmitted via an encrypted connection to our backup servers.  Once your data arrives on our servers it is replicated to additional servers and remains in its encrypted state.

When your first full backup is complete, future backups will only transmit new or changed files.  This will keep backup times to a minimum.

When a backup finishes, you will be notified via email.  The email will provide you with the status of the backup, Successful, Missed or Warnings.  A Warning could mean that the backup software skipped a file because you were using it at the time of the backup.  Although our software does have the technology to backup some open files, it is usually best to close out of all programs before the backup runs.  A Missed backup, could mean that your computer was off or sleeping at the time of the backup.  Make sure your computer is not set to go to sleep, otherwise the backup will never run.

To ensure a proper backup, please see our Best Practices page for more details.
